Industry Partner Program

The GW Open Source Program Office (OSPO) proposes to formalize an Industry Partner program: a partnership in which technology organizations provide funding, student opportunities, and business expertise to GW's open source community and in return gain access to GW talent, connections to GW research and the GW OSPO Network, and an institutional affiliation. The model draws on proven patterns documented by CURIOSS, the international community of practice for academic OSPOs, and on the partnership-driven model pioneered by the Roux Institute at Northeastern University.

Objective

The overall objective of this program is to strengthen the bonds between academia and industry using open source as the glue. We believe open source provides a proven model for collaborating across organizations and across borders with trusted licenses, free or affordable infrastructure such as GitHub or GitLab, and a culture of sharing that enables innovation and impact. A key goal of this partnership is to create opportunities for students to network and learn soft skills all while doing meaningful work. Industry Partners will benefit from a strong yet lightweight recruiting pipeline where students will be guided by GW faculty and staff as they support real company needs through capstone courses and research accelerator programs. In addition, open source provides an opportunity for academia, government, and industry to work together on innovative and disruptive new technologies like AI. Together we can deliver on the promise of new technology and minimize the risks by collaborating on research projects and educating our communities. Open source has become critical infrastructure: more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies build on open-source software, and nearly a third of Fortune 100 companies now operate an OSPO to manage it (GitHub Octoverse, 2022).

GW's OSPO, supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and led by the Dean of Libraries and Academic Innovation, Dean Geneva Henry and Faculty Director Prof. Lorena Barba, has already built the foundation for this next step: a Project Registry, a 40-member cross-campus Stakeholder Group, $4,000+ in annual student awards, GW's Open Source Conference (OSCON), and new intern placements with partners such as OpenTeams and Code4GoodTech. Industry collaborators already volunteer informally as capstone project providers, hackathon judges, and GW Coders Lunch & Learn presenters. This proposal formalizes that goodwill into a sustained, mutually beneficial program.

The Industry Partners Model

GW OSPO Industry Partners will be onboarded as collaborative partners with a low barrier to entry and a high ceiling for engagement. Partners are not required to commit significant time, a modest baseline presence is enough, while an open door remains to deeper collaboration through sponsored capstone projects, internships, and grant-funded research. Open source will be the common infrastructure that enables technical collaboration between our organizations and open source philosophy will guide our governance and community building efforts. Our long term approach is to focus on building curriculum, research, and hiring pipelines directly around our growing network of industry, government, and community partners.

What Partners Contribute & What GW OSPO Provides

What Partners Contribute:

Funding: tiered sponsorship supporting student stipends, OSCON, and OSPO operations, plus in-kind gifts of software, credits, or expertise.

Student opportunities: paid internships and sponsored capstone or hackathon projects, building a pipeline into full-time hiring.

Volunteer support: mentorship, hackathon judging, and guest lectures — a minimum ask of one to two events per semester.

What GW OSPO Provides:

Access to talent: a curated pipeline of vetted, motivated students across engineering, data science, law, medicine, business, policy, and more. Plus support recruiting and managing students during capstones and internships.

Institutional affiliation: lightweight onboarding for Industry Partner(s) as a sponsored GW OSPO affiliate with access to our OSPO network. Also invitations to events and connections with internal and external open source leaders.

Connections to GW research: visibility into open-source research, open science initiatives, and GW’s Trusted AI (TAI) institute, with pathways to co-PI or advisory roles on funded projects.

Recognition: named visibility at OSCON, in the OSPO newsletter, on the GW OSPO website, within our Stakeholder Group, and for additional select events.

Levels of Engagement

Baseline (All Partners)

Presence in the OSPO's shared community workspace, official GW OSPO affiliation, and named recognition.
Requires attendance at one or two events per semester and/or support as a GW OSPO project mentor or maintainer.

Project Partners

Sponsor or mentor a capstone team, hackathon, internship, or an OSPO student ambassador using the same team-based, sprint-driven model GW already runs in its data science capstone and GW OSPO student ambassador program.
This level may require funding on a case-by-case basis depending on the size and scope of the proposed projects.

Sponsor Partners

Provide funding at a defined tier in exchange for enhanced visibility, a voice in the Stakeholder Group, first access to student talent and introductions to researchers, as well as corresponding benefits for the GW OSCON and other GW events as listed in our sponsor prospectus.

Governance & Trust

Partners are onboarded formally, including a brief vetting step, a shared communication workspace, and clear, modest expectations from day one. All capstone and internship-sponsored work carries an open source license, with intellectual property terms agreed up front so that both GW and its Partners know what is being built, and for whom. Partners retain full discretion over how far beyond the baseline they engage — the program is designed to earn deeper involvement over time, not to demand it.

Proven Precedent

Saint Louis University's Open Source with SLU formalized an identical Industry Partners program: professionals hired as unpaid contingent employees receive a university email address, library access, and co-working space in exchange for light-touch mentorship — sustaining more than 23 active open-source products worth an estimated $500,000 in delivered development work. At a larger scale, the Roux Institute demonstrates the ceiling of this model: partnerships with 200+ organizations have generated $34.8M in funded research and trained more than 4,500 partner employees, with curriculum co-designed alongside corporate partners. GW OSPO is well positioned to adapt both models to its own community, scaling from today's informal relationships to a durable, named program.

We plan to pilot an initial cohort of 5–8 Industry Partners for the 2026–2027 academic year, drawn from GW OSPO's existing network of open source collaborators. Ideally the first cohort would include GW alumni and community open source advocates, current industry sponsors who are looking to strengthen our partnerships, and government OSPOs who have open source opportunities for students.
