Researchers: do you know about The Journal of Open Source Software?

GW's Open Source Program Office (OSPO) is the university's major advocate for open source practices in research and education. One initiative that aligns perfectly with our mission is the 𝙅𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙚 𝙎𝙤𝙛𝙩𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚 (𝙅𝙊𝙎𝙎), of which our very own OSPO Faculty Director, Prof. Lorena Barba, was a founding editor and associate editor-in-chief for five years until 2021.

JOSS is a developer-friendly, open access journal that publishes brief publications called "software papers" describing research software. The journal leverages GitHub for its publication workflow, including automated editorial tasks and an open peer-review process. This novel approach streamlines the process of publishing research software, enabling researchers to receive credit for their open source contributions.

By publishing with JOSS, researchers can:
– Increase the visibility, discoverability, and impact of their open source software
– Receive citations that can be included in academic portfolios and tenure applications
– Demonstrate their commitment to open science and reproducible research

JOSS operates transparently, with all reviews and author responses publicly available. It fosters a culture of open collaboration and knowledge sharing across disciplines, aligning with our OSPO's mission to promote open source practices in academia.
